OAR

The Open Area Ratio (OAR) of a fiber optic is defined as the ratio of cross-sectional surface area of the core to that of the entire fiber (core + clad). Solid fiber optics usually have OAR's ranging from 0.6 - 0.8, while capillary structures usually have OAR's of 0.4 - 0.5 for increased structural integrity and capillary shape retention. Custom OAR's are also available and can be lower than 1%.
